Typically in nonfiction, the main idea is located in the first sentence of the first paragraph, which is known as the topic sentence. If you don't see such a sentence at the beginning, you may find the main idea in the topic sentence in the middle or even the end of this paragraph. Each writer determines the most effective place for the topic sentence that identifies the main idea. If you don't see a specific sentence that states the main idea, read the entire selection and then determine what the write is saying about the topic. One other characteristic to consider is that main ideas are often general statements, whereas the rest of the paragraph or selection will contain details that describe or support the main idea.
