Concentric Contraction:
Although weightlifting is the exercise we commonly associate with concentric muscle contractions, there are many ways to activate your muscles as they shorten. Examples include: The lifting phase of the barbell curl.
Isometric Contraction:
Some actions within a wide variety of sports require isometric or static strength. Examples include climbing, mountain biking and motocross (grip and upper body strength), Judo, wrestling, alpine skiing (static strength required to stabilize the upper and lower body), shooting, gymnastics and horseback riding.
Eccentric Contraction:
Athletic training commonly uses plyometrics and eccentric exercises to build muscle strength and endurance. Running, sprinting, jumping, hopping, and throwing a ball all use eccentric contraction to deliver power.
