Although Mongolia was NEVER part of the Soviet Union, it was closely allied with and influenced by it. Mongolia's communist government adopted the Soviet Union's economic and political systems, as well as its model for infrastructure, education and health care. It also adopted the Cyrillic alphabet in an effort to bring Mongolian and Soviet societies closer together.
When Mongolia became part of the Soviet Union (which was started by Russia), Russia created a Cyrillic alphabet (which is what they use) for the Mongolians.
Edit: You're right Zenza, I thought Mongolia was part of the Soviet Union (there goes my chance of getting best answer).
Im russian. Not offended. Some of the letters are the same as english. Some words are pronounced the same. Russia has lately been copying English words and using em on daily basis pronouncing them in Russian accent... . Sounds very retarded. the 1st time i went there and heard people on the street saying ' teenager' ..i had no idea what it was they were talking about and how they knew it. But we use Russian alphabet. ...
