Ethnography is considered essential in anthropology because it allows anthropologists to study and understand the culture, customs, and everyday lives of a specific group of people in a holistic and emic (insider's) perspective. Through ethnography, anthropologists are able to gain in-depth knowledge of the people they are studying, including their beliefs, values, social norms, and practices. This information is used to make cross-cultural comparisons, contribute to the development of anthropological theories, and can also be applied to help address social issues. Ethnography also allows anthropologists to document and preserve the culture of a group of people, which is important for future generations.
