Why is flexibility important in a full-range movement of a joint?
Consequences of Inflexibility
Inadequate flexibility has three major negative impacts on the body:
Joints require complete range of motion movement, increased blood supply and nutrition to joint tissues, and an increase in the volume of synovial joint fluid to maintain the health of cartilage and other structures inside the joint (oil in the crankcase). This impact is most noticeable in weight-bearing joints like the hips and knees.
Muscles that are less flexible tire more rapidly, forcing opposing muscle groups to work harder. Muscle fatigue can lead to muscle injuries and the inability of the muscles to protect joints from more serious harm. The hamstrings, for example, aid in knee stabilization and prevent ACL rupture.
The flexibility ability of the muscles and joints to go through the full range of motion involves four basic movements.
