Try start, run, then type msconfig. Navigate to the startup tab and disable the programs you don't want. I've always used this method with success.
If you don't have the run button enabled just do a search for msconfig.exe. You should find it instantly.
By the way, you shouldn't disable anything from Symantec unless you have a different security suite installed. You could end up compromising the security of your PC if you do so.
