"We are our choices," never said twentieth-century existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre (so far as we can prove). Regardless of the quote's probably-unreal status, the delivery of this famous line has a truly profound effect on one's life.
Personally, I credit my interest in philosophy to this quote, which inspired my first essay on the subject. Fans of Sartre appreciate his concise yet moving eloquence. The most powerful quotes, in my opinion, are those that are short and universal axioms. The French philosopher summarizes the existentialist message in four words: Choose your own life. Every decision we make is unique to us and contributes to our character and, more specifically, who we are.
Our choices determine where we go in life. These decisions shape our futures.
"You are your choices," as Roman stoic Seneca the Younger (might have) said.
